He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.

Contemplative
Brothers
Retreat

A space for brothers to enjoy their freedom in Christ together, and to dare to be known and to know one another through play, conversation, and communion.

July 13–17, 2026  ·  The Langham Huntington, Pasadena

Why we gather

It is for freedom that we have been made free. This is a space to be: come as you are, where you are, how you are.

This is a retreat designed for Black men to be genuinely, bodily, spiritually free. It is a space where what is most true in you is not just permitted but expected, and where the work of the days is simply to be present to God, to yourself, and to one another.

Daily Rhythm

The Shape of a Day

Each day moves through the same unhurried rhythm. Psalm 23 will provide a frame for each session and the retreat as a whole.

Morning

Contemplative Centering

A short, guided time of stillness to open the day. It asks nothing of you but your presence.

Morning

Personal Reflection

Time alone with a few questions. Let whatever is there surface without pressure.

Late Morning

Morning Session

The group gathers around a central question, grounded in Psalm 23, with space to share and to listen.

Afternoon

Rest & Restoration

The afternoon is yours. The pool, a walk, cards, a cigar, a nap. Whatever helps you breathe.

Late Afternoon

Afternoon Session

The second gathering of the day. Same shape: a question, the Psalm, honest conversation, prayer.

Evening

Brotherhood

Unhurried time around good food and good conversation. The simple pleasure of being men without an agenda.

Arrival · Monday, July 13

Plan to arrive by midday. The first gathering is that afternoon; the evening is dinner and settling in.

Departure · Friday, July 17

We close with a final morning gathering and send-off. Book departures for Friday afternoon or evening.

What to Bring

Bring

  • Your honest self
  • A journal or notebook you enjoy writing in
  • Comfortable clothes for being outside, poolside, and at rest
  • Something that helps you be still (music you love, a book, etc.)

Leave at Home

  • The need to have answers
  • The pressure to be further along than you are
